Yankees captain Aaron Judge went on record after the 2026 ALDS: Anthony Volpe, he said, is required for the team to win a World Series.[^1] That is a captain putting his shortstop's name in the record, plainly and publicly.

The comment lands against a hard backdrop in the Bronx. Judge will be 35 next season after missing 100 games in 2026, including the entire postseason, due to injury.[^2] Giancarlo Stanton also lost most of the year to injury.[^3] When the Yankees needed their biggest bats, both were out.

In the American League Championship Series, the Cleveland Guardians reached Game 6 before the Brewers eliminated them.[^4] Cleveland finished 26th in MLB with a.696 team OPS in the regular season - an offense that appears to have run out of steam against a deeper Milwaukee club.

In Los Angeles, the Dodgers' outfield is set: Teoscar Hernández, Andy Pages and Kyle Tucker hold the three spots.[^5] Top prospect Josue De Paula earned a postseason roster spot but saw only three plate appearances.[^6]
